Spokane Holds Grand Opening For Gateway Bridge

Tuesday, May 7, 2019

The city of Spokane held an official grand opening today [Tuesday] for the Gateway Bridge that connects the University District with the East Sprague Business District.

The bridge has been open since mid-December. It carries pedestrians and cyclists over railroad tracks that divide the two areas.

At a ceremony featuring university and community officials, Mayor David Condon said the bridge fits well into the city’s strategic plan.

“With the help of transit, it connects citizens to our medical district on the lower South Hill," Condon said. "Over time it will connect students, faculty and staff already in the district with housing, retail and job opportunities.”

Condon said the new bridge has served as a catalyst for private development in and around Sprague. He mentioned the new Catalyst building, under construction nearby. It will be occupied by Eastern Washington University.
