Mark Morris Dance Theater Comes to Gonzaga during ACDA 2020 event March 11-14

Wednesday, March 11, 2020

Gonzaga Theatre & Dance welcomes the Mark Morris Dance Group to ACDA 2020 as performers in our opening concert!

The theme of our conference is "Dance as Service." An example of how this manifests itself in our Dance department is through our vibrant Dance for Parkinson's program. We train our faculty using pedagogy founded by the Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG). Look for Dance for PD Teachers Training in the ADCA 2020 event schedule.

Patron Passes are available for community members to attend 6 concerts during the conference, Mark Morris Dance Group Opening Concert, 4 Adjudicated Concerts, and the Final Gala Concert.

About MMDG

Founded in New York City in 1980 by artistic director and choreographer Mark Morris, the Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) has been called “the preeminent modern dance organization of our time” (Yo-Yo Ma), its members receiving “highest praise for their technical aplomb, their musicality, and their sheer human authenticity.” (Bloomberg News). Live music and community engagement are vital components of the Dance Group, which has toured with its own musicians, the MMDG Music Ensemble, since 1996. Through Access/MMDG programming, the Dance Group provides educational opportunities in dance and music to people of all ages and abilities while on tour internationally and at home at the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn, NY.

The MMDG Music Ensemble, formed in 1996, is integral to the Dance Group. “With the dancers come the musicians…and what a difference it makes” (Classical Voice of North Carolina). The Ensemble’s repertory ranges from 17th and 18th century works by John Wilson and Henry Purcell to more recent scores by Ethan Iverson, Lou Harrison, and Henry Cowell. The musicians also participate in the Dance Group’s educational and community programming at home and on tour. The Music Ensemble is led by Colin Fowler, who began to collaborate with MMDG in 2005 during the creation of Mozart Dances.
