About This Event

Gonzaga University Choirs presents a livestreamed concert, “Can You See?” to celebrate Black History Month. This program features historical music by R. Nathaniel Dett, Florence Price, Undine Smith Moore, and new music from living Black composers, Adolphus Hailstork, Mark Miller, Zanaida Robles, and Joel Thompson. Concert Choir and Discantus Treble Chorus join with faculty members from Gonzaga’s Colleagues of Color Affinity Group, who will share poetry throughout the program.

To amplify and celebrate the music and experiences of Black American composers, “Can You See?” will feature an array of musical styles and texts: traditional African American Spirituals, lyrics from protest signs such as “Love is Love, Black Lives Matter,” text from Black post-Civil war poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, words from Amadou Diallo’s last voicemail to his mother before being shot by NYC police, and thirteenth century sacred Latin text. Register to join Gonzaga Choirs on Saturday, February 27th at 7pm for this free, livestreamed concert through Gonzaga Choir’s Youtube page.
