WSU Nursing students help with Spokane’s Point in Time Homeless Count

This week marks the first year that WSU’s College of Nursing partnered with the City of Spokane for the Point in Time homeless count. The homeless count is done nationally to help understand the causes of homelessness and the needs of those who are unhoused. Students were sent to shelters and areas in the city where unsheltered individuals congregate to interview those experiencing homelessness. All WSU nursing students from the upcoming 2023 graduating class participated during this week’s community health project on Tuesday, January 24th and Wednesday, January 25th, 2023.
Spokesman-Review reporter Emry Dinman interviewed several WSU nursing students as well as associate professors Kay Olson and Sarah Griffith.
“I teach community health. We look at populations, and the homeless population is hard to ignore right now… The students graduating in May will be taking care of a lot of these people.”

When asked whether students thought they should volunteer again next year, WSU nursing student, Abby Darr said “yes, this should definitely happen again next semester… it was an amazing experience.”
