ARTIST STATEMENTS
DAN MCCANN, “EMBRACE THE STRUGGLE, PART TWO, THE TABLE”
SHORT BIO: I have been working with Art as far back as I can remember. 10 or 12 years old, making collages as an adult I started working in stained-glass and moved to found object mixed media sculpting.
EXHIBITION STATEMENT: I had a piece at the Saranac Arts Project, titled embrace the struggle, which consisted of nine electric metronomes, competing with each other, on their own. The table will consist of four electric metronomes. I have written a score for four players to play the metronomes, The score is 7 1/2 minutes long. There will be a conductor for timing.
ANN PORTER, “ALPHABET” (pictured at left)
I bought two milk crates full of discarded marquee letters for twenty-five dollars. I was desperate to have them, although at the time, I wasn’t sure why. Now, after having cut them, drilled them, sewn them, laminated both metal and paper onto them, I have an idea or two.
Letters and numbers are miracles. They can tell us everything from how much a sixpack is at the gas station (Bud Light $4.99!!!) to who someone is (Hi! My name is…Ann), what something is, when, where—well, you get the idea. And how did you get that idea? By reading these letters, right here on this page. Like I said, a miracle.
My plan—or more truthfully what developed into a plan—was to alter those shapes so we could see them a different way, as something equally miraculous but unfamiliar. I wanted each piece to make abstract visual sense, so the letters returned to their origins, pleasing us with their untutored shapes.
