Wednesday, July 1, 2009
Work has completed on the first phase of the Martin Luther King Jr. Way project, also referred to as the Riverside Extension, Phase I. The goal of the entire project (Phase II is planned for 2016) is to move vehicular traffic on Spokane Falls Boulevard will be moved away from Riverpoint campus while creating an inviting setting within the University District for commuters. Summer 2009, the Spokane City Council approved Martin Luther King Jr. Way as the name for the Riverside Avenue extension.
The new boulevard also includes bike lanes, street trees, wide sidewalks, and an elevated median. Additionally, the project will extend:
- Riverside Avenue/Martin Luther King Jr. Way from Division Street to Sherman Avenue
- Pine Street from Main to Riverside avenues
- Spokane Falls Boulevard from Division Street to Sherman Avenue
- Sherman Avenue from Martin Luther King Jr. Way to Riverpoint Boulevard
This is just Phase 1 of our plans for the corridor. Phase 2A, planned for 2016, will include work from Sherman Street to Erie Street. Phase 2B, scheduled for construction in 2017, runs from Erie Street to Perry Street. Construction of a segment of the Ben Burr trail between Erie Street and vacated Front Avenue is also included in future Phase 2B.
The $3.77 million project (Phase 1) began in February 2011 and was completed in May 2012. Funding for Phase I came from federal, state, and local funds.
